The useful number is internal depth, not the outside size. A bench that is 16 inches deep outside often gives you 12 inches inside — enough for shoes, not for boots. Check the load rating if it doubles as seating; 300 lb is common, 500 lb for solid wood.
What to look at: lift-up lids need a soft-close hinge or they slam on fingers. Drawers are easier for daily use than a lid. A cushion adds comfort but usually is not included — check before ordering.
