Platform Bed with Drawers: Are They Worth It?
The short answer: a platform bed with drawers is worth it in a small bedroom with no closet, and a poor choice in a room with deep carpet, a low ceiling fan, or a bed you plan to move often.
What you actually gain
Two drawers under a queen bed typically add 8–12 cubic feet of storage — roughly the capacity of a small dresser. That is enough for off-season bedding, shoes or kids’ toys, which is exactly the clutter that usually ends up on the floor.
What you give up
- Drawer height. Most under-bed drawers are 6–8 inches deep. Boots and folded jeans fit; a standing vacuum does not.
- Floor clearance. Drawers need 18–24 inches of open floor in front to pull out. In a tight room that is the same space you need to walk.
- Weight. A drawer base adds 30–60 lb to the frame, which matters if you move apartments.
- Dust. The gap under the bed collects it, and drawers make cleaning harder.
Four numbers to check before ordering
| Number | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Mattress size | A queen frame can be 64″ wide, not 60″ |
| Frame outside width | Must clear the doorway and the wall |
| Drawer interior height | 6–8″ is typical; check against what you store |
| Drawer pull-out depth | 18–24″ of floor needed in front |
Structure matters more than storage
Queen and king platform beds need a centre support rail. Without one, the slats bow and the mattress develops a ridge in the middle. Look for a centre rail plus at least five slats, and a weight rating of 600 lb or more for a wood frame.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a box spring?
No. Slat spacing of 2.5–3 inches supports foam and hybrid mattresses directly.
Can drawers be added later?
Rarely. Drawer bases are built into the frame; there is no standard add-on kit.
Will it fit over carpet?
Yes, but drawers on carpet need more pull force and may rub. Look for drawer glides rather than wood-on-wood runners.
Side drawers vs footboard drawers
Side drawers are the common design and the more useful one — you can open them while standing beside the bed. Footboard drawers look tidier but are shallower and harder to reach in a small room. If the bed sits in a corner, side drawers on one side only may be the practical choice.
Mattress compatibility and airflow
Slatted bases with 2.5–3 inch gaps work with foam, hybrid and most spring mattresses. Solid platform tops trap moisture; if the top is a solid panel, look for ventilation holes or add a breathable mat. A drawer base raises the mattress by 2–4 inches compared with a plain platform, which changes the height of the bed more than people expect.
Moving and assembly
Drawer bases weigh 30–60 lb more than a simple frame and usually ship in two or three boxes. They are harder to disassemble than a plain platform, so if you move every year, a separate under-bed storage box may serve you better. On carpet, drawer glides matter more than on hard floors — wood-on-wood runners drag.
